Located on the western outskirts of Funchal, São Martinho is one of the most populous and dynamic parishes in Madeira. It offers a perfect blend of modern tourism, local history, and stunning coastal landscapes.
History & Description
São Martinho was officially established as a parish on March 3, 1579. Originally a rural area focused on agriculture—specifically sugar cane and vineyards—it has evolved into the "Lido" or hotel district of Funchal.
The Coat of Arms: Features sugar cane and a goose (a symbol associated with Saint Martin). The purple background represents the local wine production.
Modern Vibe: Today, it is characterized by its luxury hotels, modern shopping centers (like Forum Madeira), and beautiful seaside promenades.
Typical Foods
Gastronomy in São Martinho reflects the broader flavors of Madeira but peaks during its specific festivals.
Roasted Chestnuts & New Wine: Traditional for the Magusto celebrations in November.
Bacalhau na Chapa: Grilled codfish, often served during the local St. Martin festivities.
Espetada Madeirense: Beef skewers seasoned with garlic and salt, grilled over laurel wood.
Bolo do Caco: A warm, circular flatbread made with sweet potato, usually slathered in garlic butter.
Carne de Vinha d'Alhos: Pork marinated in wine and garlic, particularly popular around Christmas.
Festivals
The parish is the heart of some of Funchal's most beloved traditions:
Festa de São Martinho (Nov 11): The biggest local event. Locals gather at the Church of São Martinho to taste the "new wine" and eat roasted chestnuts. It is one of the most authentic arraiais (street parties) on the island.
Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio: Celebrated just before St. Martin’s Day, featuring religious processions and traditional folklore music.
Nature & Outdoors
Despite being a developed area, São Martinho boasts some of the best coastal access on the island:
Praia Formosa: The largest public beach in Madeira, featuring a mix of volcanic pebbles and black sand.
Doca do Cavacas: Famous natural volcanic swimming pools with a stunning view of Cabo Girão.
Pico dos Barcelos: A viewpoint sitting at 355 meters that offers one of the best panoramic views of the Funchal "amphitheater."
Promenade do Funchal: A long seaside walkway that connects the Lido area to Câmara de Lobos, perfect for a sunset stroll.
Activities
Lido Bathing Complex: One of the most famous swimming areas with direct sea access and saltwater pools.
Coastal Hiking: The walk from the Lido area to the village of Câmara de Lobos via the promenade and the "Tunnel" is a local favorite.
Whale & Dolphin Watching: Many tours depart from the nearby Funchal harbor, passing along the São Martinho coast.
